JUNCTION 5 MAPS
The first map was drawn up by a group who supported the Borough Green Bypass, and did not want J5 Slips to be a better alternative, especially funded by building a factory in the Greenbelt. It was deliberately drawn wide enough to require the closing of Chipstead Road, causeing righteous indignation in Riverhead, Chipstead and Chevening, and inspiring Micheael Fallon to take up arms against the scheme. As a Senior Member of the Government he was able to get the scheme squashed, and his heavy hand still remains. It has been designed with two bridges, almost doubling any cost
But this second Highways Agency map clearly shows the slips between the A21 and the M26 can be delivered within the existing footprint of the junction, and requires no extra landtake. This design is far more sympathetic to its AONB setting, and only requires a single bridge.
